Bioelectrical impedance analysis is based on the analysis of the body’s composition.
This means measuring the opposition of various human body tissues to the flow of a weak electrical current.
The composition of body mass takes into account numerous parameters that are specific to each individual:
– muscular mass,
– the mineral content of the bones,
– body fat ratios,
– and membrane reactivity.
Thus a fall of 2% in hydration can result in a reduction of 20% in sports performance.
Advancing years, chronological and physiological, and ageing are accompanied by changes in the body condition and changes in the body’s components. Some of these changes are not immediately apparent (bone density), others result in functional changes (reduced independence due to sarcopenia*), and all are sources of adverse effects for the health by increased risk of illness (bone fractures, risk of dehydration etc.).
Sometimes changes in the physical constitution limit therapeutic options. Therefore, there is a great motivation in recognising these physical modifications both to prevent the consequences, and to adjust the type of therapy accordingly.
