Regenerative techniques
(face, neck, chest, hands, other specific zones)

Biostimulation or cell revitalisation is a technique for which I have a very special regard as I have been working with it for many years, bringing to bear twenty years of experience in the practice of cosmetic medicine. I am the first physician in Belgium to endorse this anti-ageing technique both from a curative and preventive viewpoint. Biostimulation is a skin regeneration treatment that restores the face’s volume, curves, and elasticity

Biostimulation is a medical method, with the objective of regenerating the skin and the connective tissues, altered by ageing or trauma. Wrinkles, pigment spots, depleted tissues and lifeless, sallow, or dehydrated skin are the primary targets of this new technique. The method is equally suitable in the prevention of ageing.

The special feature of this 100% autologous technique is that it offers an extremely attractive option for ageing gracefully and harmoniously. It is entirely natural and therefore does not incorporate any risks of allergic reactions, and it is performed under local anaesthesia without requiring a hospital stay. Moreover, this new technique – the product of the most recent research in relation to the regeneration of tissues – has the advantage of combining mature adult cells, adult stem cells and cell differentiation activators obtained from the patient’s own body.

Under local anaesthetic, collection of 20 cc of subcutaneous tissue from the trochanteric area (buttocks or outer thighs) or abdominal area. This tissue is especially rich in fatty cells, containing – among other things – Mesenchymal Stem Cells. The adult stem cells actually lie dormant in various tissues awaiting stimulation to repair damaged tissue. The growth factors contained in blood platelets trigger the cellular differentiation. Finally it should be noted that fatty tissue is very rich in stem cells and is also highly accessible. Blood is collected to prepare various autologous solutions such as plasma, platelet-enriched plasma, a growth factor solution and finally a thrombin solution.

A morphological study of the patient is then conducted and after the losses of volumes and curvature have been surveyed, the filling treatment is commenced by minutely treating step-by-step the various anatomical zones and respecting their mutual influence on the cutaneous ageing of the face. The various solutions, all prepared with the patient’s own cells and tissues are injected according to their densities and properties for the purpose of regenerating the various skin tissues. The last stage involves the skin itself which is revitalised with a blood plasma rich in numerous elements (vitamins, trace elements, anti-oxidants and hormones). The patient will be able to return home with his or her own personalised and enriched serum. This is what makes this treatment unique and genuinely personalised. The special feature of this 100% autologous technique is that it offers an extremely attractive option for ageing gracefully and harmoniously. Moreover, this new technique, the product of the most recent research in relation to the regeneration of tissues, has the advantage of combining mature adult cells, adult stem cells and cell differentiation activators obtained from the patient’s own body. What are the advantages? SAFETY: it is a 100% biocompatible product with a limited risk of intolerance. EFFECTIVENESS: The platelets have exceptional revitalising properties which have been known and exploited for many years in reparative surgery. These are living cells that recreate living tissue where they are injected. SIMPLICITY: Only one collection of blood and tissue is required. For whom? Whenever the need arises. The loss of curvature and volume can be observed from age 20 onwards. The treatment can also be performed preventively, or to change the form or curvature of the face to enhance its harmony and coherence. Patients are between 20 and 65 years of age, however the effects are the most spectacular in young patients who lead healthy lives.

Why choose this method? Among the reasons mentioned by patients who resort to this new method, apart from knowledge of its existence are: the rejection of surgical intervention, and not wanting to use synthetic products of all kinds that flood the cosmetic market. In brief, I would say that it is a technique in line with the most recent scientific discoveries and highly respectful of the living world. It is associated in this case with a genuine ’biological facelift‘. In the majority of cases, the entire face is treated. But sometimes specific anatomical zones may be treated in isolation. It is possible to also envisage treating the skin surface. In this case, use is made of a ‘derma-roller’ that seems more effective to me than mesotherapy with a needle. The products used are essentially obtained from the plasma which is a source of autologous minerals and vitamins and therefore more easily assimilated than synthetic products available on the market. Dark circles around the eyes are an excellent example. In fact, it’s the best I know. This is because the treatment not only permits an increase in the density of the tissues but the colour of the skin is also improved. Treatment of this facial zone is essential as the effects of ageing are mainly felt in this area. Certain individuals also have a genetic predisposition. As a result, this is an excellent technique, especially because at present there is no other alternative that is really effective in the treatment of dark circles around the eyes. The hands, just like the neck and neckline are also excellent examples. Astonishing results have also been achieved with the hair, both in the treatment of androgenic alopecia and also in, sometimes long-standing, alopecia areata. The technique in this case is different to that normally suggested. Sessions repeated at 2 week intervals appear to accelerate the regrowth of the hair until the administration of stem cells. Recent research in this area seems to show that baldness is not due to an absence of hair follicles but on the contrary due to a lack of growth factors capable of activating the dormant stem cells present in the bulb of the hair follicles. How often? Normally for complete facial revitalisation, the number of sessions is limited to two separated by a period of 4 to 6 weeks. Each treatment takes two hours. In more resistant cases generally with older patients, above 50 years of age, a third session may be worthwhile. Once the graft has taken hold, the effect can last for several years (between 3 and 7 years). Nonetheless I recommend an annual ‘touch up’ as ageing is a process that continues to evolve. Secondary effects: Immediately afterwards patients notice a swelling of the tissues and the possibility of bruising in the periorbital area (around the eyes) and around the mouth. The risk of haematoma is rare. The swelling considerably decreases after 48 hours. It is possible to use make-up after 24 hours. As a special precaution, we recommend taking arnica or preventive antibiotic protection 48 hrs before the operation.
