In view of the progress achieved by medicine and the improvements in standards of health and material comfort, mankind will, in the course of this century, face an enormous challenge consisting of living to an ever greater age while slowing down for as long as possible the appearance of various diseases, whether degenerative or not, inevitably associated with the natural phenomenon of ageing.

In terms of prevention of these diseases (cancer, presbycusis, deterioration of visual acuity, atherosclerosis, diabetes, etc.) all the experts agree that two aspects play a primary role:
the healthiness of our lifestyles which can strongly limit the excessive formation of toxic derivatives of oxygen (including the notorious pro-oxidant ‘free radicals’) in our bodies. Smoking, the excessive consumption of alcohol, taking of medicines, excessive exposure to solar radiation, the overly intense or poorly managed practice of a sport are among the factors promoting an increase of these detrimental oxygen by-products;
our way of eating with a balanced and carefully selected diet, containing in particular the antioxidants required to prevent this toxic oxygen from having its harmful effects. An imbalance between the balance of pro-oxidants and the antioxidant defence mechanism in favour of the former is expressed in the body by the appearance of oxidant stress, which is a favourable breeding ground for the development of the diseases mentioned above.
How to know if we are not becoming too “oxidized” and if we are well equipped with antioxidants? One response to these questions is now available; using an analytical tool allows us to measure anyone’s oxidant stress status (OSS) at any age, on the basis of a simple blood sample. The profile is evaluated according to four investigative focuses: (i) measurement of antioxidants, (ii) assay of the trace elements, (iii) analysis of the iron metabolism, (iv) a search for evidence of oxidative damage to the lipids, DNA or proteins. The totality of these results is presented graphically in the form of an Oxidative Stress Compass Rose®.
On the basis of the results obtained, health professionals will be able to answer certain questions:
What are the consequences of a possible deficit in the blood of antioxidants or trace elements on the concentration of oxidation markers possibly involved in the development of various pathologies?
What could the origins of oxidant stress be (e.g. dietary imbalance, abnormal glycaemia etc.)?
What is the best strategy for correcting a disturbed OSS based on the objective criteria obtained from scientific literature?
The lab tests are performed in the Luxembourg-based laboratory, the Laboratoires Réunis.
